Ara Malikian

A violinist of Armenian descent, born in Beirut in 1968 and based in Spain since the late 1990s. He began playing with his father during the Lebanese civil war, and a scholarship took him to study at the Hannover University of Music. His many competition wins include the Mendelssohn competition in Berlin (1987) and the Pablo Sarasate competition in Pamplona (1995), and he was leader of the Orquesta Sinfónica de Madrid. His repertoire blends classical music with Armenian folk music, flamenco and tango, and in 2008 he conducted the orchestra on Extremoduro's album La ley innata.
