Experimental music festivals in Spain

Experimental works more as a cross-cutting label than as a circuit of its own. Almost half of the festivals that carry it combine it with techno, such as Aquasella in Arriondas or Monegros Desert Festival in Fraga; others blend it with electronic music, such as Sónar and L.E.V. Festival, or with folk, such as Festival Sonraíz in Carcabuey (Córdoba).

Madrid and Barcelona lead the way, but Huesca, Asturias and Pontevedra also appear more than once. Summer, from June to September, accounts for most of the usual dates.

The venues help to explain the variety within the style. Own Spirit Festival takes place beside the Santa Ana reservoir, in Baldellou (Huesca), and usually falls in September; Iwa Fest spreads its programme across the Foso del Hornabeque, the UNED and the Fuerte de Victoria Grande in Melilla, also in September.

In Galicia, Underfest Xacobeo, in Vigo, moves into November, the latest month for the style, and Encordass Fiddle Fest is based on the Illa de San Simón.

For those looking for the side closest to techno in the height of summer, Dreambeach, in Vélez-Málaga, runs between July and August; Kalyma Festival Tenerife usually takes place in August, and Zodiak Festival, in Tomelloso (Ciudad Real), in July.
