Techno festivals in Spain

Techno has two faces on the festival calendar. One is urban and centres on Madrid, with festivals such as Circoloco, Music On and Blackworks Weekend Festival, and on Barcelona, with Sónar and Offweek in June. The other leaves the big cities in summer: Medusa Festival on the beach at Cullera and Monegros Desert Festival in Fraga.

July and August account for most of the usual dates. In most cases, techno shares the label with electronic or experimental music.

Away from the two main hubs, techno turns up in very different places. In April, Sun & Snow Festival sets up at the Parking de Los Peñones in Sierra Nevada; in March, Lanna Festival takes place in Gijón. September brings WOS Festival to Santiago de Compostela, spreading its programme across the Teatro Principal, the CGAC and other venues around the city, and in October Blackworks Festival arrives in Bilbao.

In summer, the coast and the interior share the events between them. Sophie Festival takes over Ogus Park in Churriana between June and September; Aquasella, in Arriondas, and Kalyma Festival Tenerife are usually held in August, and Dreambeach, in Vélez-Málaga, between July and August. Inland, Zodiak Festival in Tomelloso, Veta Festival in Barruelo de Santullán (Palencia) and Holika Festival in Calahorra are usually held in July.
