Folk festivals in Spain

Folk is a summer genre and, above all, a July one: it is the most common month, with events such as Festival de Ortigueira (A Coruña), PortAmérica at the Azucarera de Portas (Pontevedra) and Músicos En La Naturaleza, in Hoyos del Espino (Ávila).

Navarre and Castellón are the provinces with the most festivals in the genre. In Navarre, the blend with indie dominates, with Estaciones Sonoras Primavera in Cascante and Mugacu Fest in Viana; in Castellón, folk crosses over with pop at fairs such as Fira Trovam, at the Auditori de Castelló.

Folk rarely comes on its own. As well as indie, the most frequent crossover, it appears alongside jazz at Jazzaldia San Sebastián, which usually takes place in July in Donostia, and at Festival Ribeira Sacra, in Lugo. It mixes with flamenco and world music at Murcia Tres Culturas, in May, and with rock at summer festivals such as SonRías Baixas, in Bueu (Pontevedra), and Alpaka Fest, in Hacinas (Burgos), both between July and August.

On the Lugo coast, Osa do Mar spreads its concerts between the Barco Museo and other venues in Burela in September.

For those who would rather extend the season, autumn still offers a few events. Festival Arrecife en Vivo, in Arrecife (Las Palmas), runs between September and October; Fira d’Onda usually takes place in October, and Fira Trovam closes the calendar in November.
