Festivals in Catalonia

The province of Barcelona is home to most of the festivals in Catalonia, and the Parc del Fòrum hosts two of its summer events: Primavera Sound, in June, and Cruïlla, in July. Girona contributes events spread across Roses, Lloret de Mar, Puigcerdà and Calella de Palafrugell, while Tarragona and Lleida complete the map.

Pop, indie and rock are the most common styles, but electronic music carries real weight of its own. Sónar blends it with techno and experimental music in June, and MIRA Digital Arts Festival takes it to Fira de Barcelona's Montjuïc venue in November. Jazz features in Terrassa, with Festival Jazz in March, and in the capital with Les Nits de Barcelona.

The Catalan calendar gets going early. Between January and May there is a run of events such as Guitar BCN, Festival Strenes in the province of Girona and Polar Sound, which sets up at the Baqueira Beret ski resort in March. March is, in fact, one of the busiest months outside the summer.

The bulk of the season arrives between June and August, and much of it takes place outside the city of Barcelona. Vida Festival takes over the Masia d'en Cabanyes in Vilanova i la Geltrú in July; Canet Rock is held that same month in Canet de Mar, and Cap Roig Festival runs its programme between July and August in Calella de Palafrugell. In Girona, August brings together the electronic music of ON/OFF Music Festival, in Lloret de Mar, and Mediterranea, in Roses, along with the indie and folk of Occident Summerfest Cerdanya, in Puigcerdà.

Rock has its own events: Barcelona Rock Fest at the Parc de Can Zam in July, Igualada Rock City at the Anfiteatre de Les Comes in August and PintorRock, in Reus, in October. Autumn in Barcelona is rounded off by Cruïlla de Tardor, which runs until December.
